How to Backup Your Phone at Home Instead of Paying Someone Else to Do It.

We have all been through this scenario (or similar one) where you are using your phone for several months or several years and then it just slips out of your hand and despite the nice case you bought, the screen shatters and you need to get it replaced.

Now people like ME, remind you CONSTANTLY to BACKUP YOUR DATA.

So before you take it into the store for repair you need to backup your phone.   A lot of stores will charge you now to backup and restore your data.

But you don't need them.

As long as the phone powers on and is recognized by your computer, YOU can backup your own data.

If you screen is shattered really badly and you could risk cutting yourself or swiping your finger across would pull small glass pieces out, then perhaps a temporary layer of saran wrap to hold it together until you get it fixed.

Now, backing up your phone.

iOS (iPhone any version.)
Connect it to your computer, go into iTunes and select backup.

Android:
This gets more complicated as there is no ONE way things are backed up because different providers and manufacturers create different backup strategies.

However, if you connect ANY android to a PC you can backup your data in a couple simple steps.

Google can be setup to configure automatic backups and on some Android model phones it will automatically backup everything to your google account.   (This is really useful and a bit scary, but I find it much more useful.)  Pictures are not backed up in full resolution unless you specify it or you have a promotional deal like the Pixel or some provider phones.

I'll run you through how I make sure my phone is backed up.

Connect your phone to your windows PC (I'm using windows because I don't currently have a mac).
On your phone select the transfer files option.   (This should be the same with a Mac).

Below is my desktop after plugging my phone in and connecting it.  My phone shows up as an XT1575.

Open your phone to look at the directories on it.   In my case I have the internal memory and an SD card.  (I take a LOT of pictures and videos).

Now for most of you, you will only have the internal shared storage or internal storage.
Open that drive. (Yes this is considered a hard drive just like on your computer only it is solid state instead of a spinning disk.)

Once you are in the internal storage the easiest way to backup EVERYTHING is to hit Select All (highlighted in upper center right, and then copy and paste it into a folder on your desktop (label the folder "phone backup xx xx 2018" [todays date]so you know when you backed it up ).

Or you can use the copy to option also highlighted above and it will help you navigate to a folder.

Make sure the folder you are copying to has enough space.

If you ONLY care about pictures and videos then get the DCIM folder, downloads, and pictures.  Also any APP specific folders that create/modify pictures and videos (way to many options to count.
