How to deal with cyber bullies.

So the SINGLE, MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN DO,

IS TO LOVE YOUR CHILD UNCONDITIONALLY.

Tell them you love them, EVERY, SINGLE, DAY!

Talk to them and make sure they know you trust them.   Establish this trust EARLY.

In case you aren't familiar with me, I have a degree in psychology, 20 years of cyber security experience, father  of an autistic child and another on the way.

Be aware of what they are and are not watching on TV, tablet, and telephone.

Show them this!  This video is POWERFUL.  These same tactics work in real life and online. Show it to them several times.

Will the tools in this video work every time?  Probably not, but it will MOST of the time.  The most powerful tool you can teach your children is KNOWLEDGE.  Understanding.   Most kids have been bullied, at some point in their lives.  I was rarely a victim of bullying because I was the second tallest/biggest kid in my class up until about 8th grade.  Even in high school it happened to me once and it bugged me for a couple days but I hadn't really thought about it decades until writing this post.

Isn't this a TECH BLOG?  Yes it is, but this is for the parents out there and psychology is far more effective for dealing with bullies then technology.  However, since you probably want some technological tools to help you monitor your kids, I mean that's why you're reading this tech blog after all, here is a list to help you get started.

For starters USE THE TOOLS from manufacturers and developers. Microsoft, Apple, Android, Amazon, etc. all offer a variety of methods and tools to help track what your kids are doing and help keep your kids safe.  The biggest thing though is them TELLING you about the problem and your AWARENESS of it.   You can help your child overcome the problem.

There aren't many apps that address bullying because an app isn't always going to be helpful, however this link has a list of APPS which may help with bullying.

So what can you do besides make sure your child has love and trust and is willing to talk to you?
LISTEN to them.  Take them seriously.  It may not seem like a big deal to you but it is to them.

Avoid giving your children a phone as long as possible.   Look at something like this as an alternative initially.  Relay:Think of this as a nation wide cellular walkie-talkie.  No screen, no social media apps, no texting.   Just a quick communication channel to your family.

Then there is something like this Smart Watch.

There is a lot out there and it really depends on what your child is doing online but YOU the parent MUST be involved.

Social Media each have their own recommended safety guides and I'm going to link you to them here.  Each one of these could be their own post. I try to keep things short and simple in this blog but sometimes I go over a single page.
